What is Ultra-Mobile (UMPC)

What is Ultra-Mobile (UMPC)

UMPC or Ultra Mobile Personal Computer, These are more portable than a laptop but contain all or much of the functionality. UMPC devices are expected to be small enough so they are easy to carry, deliver long battery life so you can access information for extended periods of time, have multiple wireless options so you can be connected anytime, and are location aware so it can adapt to your personal needs

I can't classify between UMPC and Sub-notebook. Sometime I've see some UMPC is Sub-notebook but some Sub-notebook is not UMPC then I notice UMPC is look like more Tablet PCs or PDA and they have built-in touchscreen display.

But I'm not interesting because they are high cost and unique (hard maintenance), some UMPC device such as ASUS R2H, Fujitsu U Series, Samsung Q1, Tablet PC, VIA Nanobook and GIGABYTE U60.

References
http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/UMPC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umpc

What is Sub-notebooks (ULCPC)

What is Sub-notebooks (ULCPC)

Written tee
Monday, 05 May 2008

A Sub-notebook (ULCPC) attempts to deliver the promise that laptops have mostly abandoned. This promise is a real portable computer that can be used on the road for extended periods and is small enough to not weigh you down carrying it. This change the world of computer notebook to lowest price.

The Sub-notebook and ultra-mobile's have the same claim to fame which is that contrary to a regular laptop they can actually be used on the road. For that they need to have a great battery performance and be light-weight. Usually this combination comes at a premium: rare are the ultra-mobiles that come cheaper than 1000 USD. The Sub-notebook differs primarily from the UMPC in that it does not run a table PC style OS and does not usually have a touch screen. A Sub-notebook differs from a Palm-Top device in that it can run a bigger OS and can, in some cases, really replace the Desktop computer in the field by being able to run the same applications.

Recently a number of ultra low cost PC laptops have been announced that have potential as e-book reading devices. These new devices complement the already announced educational laptops for developing countries, the OLPC 2B1 and the Intel Classmate. The new devices are intended for bulk sale to governments but they can also be bought by the general public.

This new generation of devices promises to deliver these same features, at the cost of other features, and be much cheaper.

Some recent subnotebooks that I'm interesting are ASUS Eee PC, HP 2133 Mini-Note PC, Cloudbook, Classmate PC and the cheapest first history of sub-notebook OLPC

Reference
http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/ULCPC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subnotebook
